ABOUT AUTHOR

Neal Bosshardt

Neal Bosshardt was born and raised in Redmond, Utah.  He graduated from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah and then from Brigham Young University with a degree in Business Management.  He returned to Redmond to work in the family business in 1974 when he was one of 6 employees (5 of those were family members), and worked there until he retired in 2018.  He worked in every aspect of the business from mining, packaging, to marketing.  He was involved with all of the products from table salt to livestock salt to de-icing salt and helped expand their markets from strictly the western states to be the entire United States, as well as Canada, New Zealand, and Japan.

His passion is teaching people the medicinal benefits of unrefined salt and natural clay.  Here is his comment as to why he teaches classes even after retiring:

“Natural Clay and Unrefined Salt kept us out of the emergency room, the Doctor’s office, and drug store so many times over the years that I feel badly for parents and grandparents who don’t have these natural products or know how to use them.

He and his wife, Marcia, have 8 children and 28 grandchildren.  When not teaching classes on natural salt and clay, he enjoys making sauerkraut, compost, working in the garden and spending time with family.

We Eat Clay FAQ

Where do you get the clay?

I don’t work for any clay company so I don’t promote any specific brand.  The clay that I use is called Redmond Clay and it comes from a company in Heber City, Utah called Redmond Life.

What type of clay is it?

The clay I use is a bentonite clay that has properties of both sodium bentonite and calcium bentonite.

Can I ingest the clay?

Clays are different and not all clays should be ingested.  We have been ingesting the clay we use since 1975.  We have never seen it cause a negative side effect or an allergic reaction.  The worst thing that has ever happened is ‘nothing’.

What is the difference between bentonite and montmorillonite?

They are types of minerals with similar properties; bentonite was first discovered near Fort Benton, Montana so it was called bentonite.  When similar material was found near Montmorillon, France it was called Montmorillonite.

Are all bentonites the same?

No; there are sodium bentonites, calcium bentonites, and some that are a combination of both.  There are both high swelling and low swelling bentonites.

Do all clays work the same?

No, some work better than others and some may not work at all. Dextreit says to experiment till you find one that does what you want it to do.

If I put the gel externally on a burn, do I need to cover it?

Absolutely! You do not want clay to dry on a burn, so cover it with plastic wrap or a wet towel. Change it twice a day or more often if the pain comes up or if it is stinky.

Does it need to be covered when putting it on other wounds or infections?

No, but covering it while it dries from mayonnaise consistency to play dough consistency will keep it in place and off the furniture. As it dries, it stimulates the circulation, reduces the pain, and speeds the healing. You can use a towel, handkerchief, gauze, or ace bandage.

Will pouring the clay sediment down the sink or tub foul up my septic tank system?

No. We have been doing it for years and never had trouble.

Why is that Prop 65 cancer and reproductive harm warning on the label?

It is there for the same reason that that warning is on the entrance to Disneyland in California. The natural bentonite clay is actually used to detoxify because it will pull lead and other heavy metals out of the body.
